A Class D license is required by the state of Florida for individuals to work in the private security industry. To obtain this license, candidates must complete 40 hours of professional security training, as mandated by Florida Statutes 493. The law stipulates that any security agency offering contract services must employ licensed security guards to perform these duties. It is illegal for a security guard to work for a security company without a valid license. However, if a client directly hires and pays the security guard’s salary, a Class D license is not necessary. The license is valid for two years and must be renewed before expiration in order for the security guard to continue working.
The Class D training program equips security guards with the essential skills needed for private security work. The 40-hour training includes modules on access control, patrolling, ethics, terrorism, fire watch, medical emergencies, and emergency preparedness. Upon completing the training, graduates can apply for the Florida security license and begin working immediately.
To become a security officer in the State of Florida, students are required to complete 40 hours of classroom training for the Florida Security D License. The Florida security training course is available online and in-person and must be completed at a licensed security school (DS). Students must be at least 18 years of age with no disqualifying criminal history to apply for the Florida Security D License. Students must be a U.S Citizen or have a work visa to apply for the Security D License.

Students will also be required to pay the State of Florida, Division of Licensing “D” application $45 fee, and $42 for the FBI background check.
